Getting to Portman Road

Portman Road is between the town centre and railway station. It is an 8-10 minute walk from the railway station. If you come out of the station and look straight ahead, you will see the floodlights and the stadium. If you are travelling by coach, from the coach park on West End Road, the walk to the stadium is about the same distance. If you are familiar with the stadium from previous visits, note that it does look a bit different nowadays, as many buildings have been demolished and development started around the ground. Also, the stadium itself has seen some major changes for the 2024/25 season.

Travelling by Car

The stadium address is Portman Road, Ipswich, IP1 2DA, although you may prefer to use the postcode for your chosen car park. From West Ham, the journey is pretty simple. If you are starting in the Stratford area, near the A12, then take the A12 to the A406, immediately join the M11, then take the M25 and A12, which will then take you all the way to the outskirts of Ipswich where you follow the last few miles below. You will leave the M11 at junction 6 to join the M25 clockwise to junction 28 where you join the A12 towards Chelmsford. Alternatively, especially if you are starting north-east of the A406, you can join the A12 in London and stay on this until you reach the A12 / A14 Copdock Interchange. If you are travelling from around East Ham or around the A13, then the easiest way to Ipswich is via the A13 (East) / M25 / A12, or A13 to Basildon / A130 / A12. The journey time should be no more than a couple of hours.

Travelling by Coach

Away coaches will park in the West End Road car park (post code IP1 2DZ), 5-10 minutes’ walk from the ground. The Station Hotel (away fans pub – see below) is just a couple of minutes away – go towards the bridge over the river, at the east end of the car park, turn right and you’ll find the pub the other side of the river, right opposite the railway station. It may be possible to arrange a drop-off nearer to the stadium for fans with mobility issues – please contact Ipswich Town's Disability Liaison Officer, Lee Smith, on 01473 400556 in advance of the game to arrange this.

Travelling by Train

There are no planned engineering works on the London to Ipswich line on the day of the match. For those travelling by train, it takes just under 10 minutes to walk from Ipswich station to Portman Road. There are regular trains from London Liverpool Street to Ipswich. Many – but by no means all – stop at Stratford.

We would suggest, on your outward journey, boarding the train at Liverpool Street, as trains may be standing room only by Stratford. After the game there are trains from Ipswich at 18:25, 18:41 and 19:11 which arrive back at London Liverpool Street at 19:44, 19:47 and 20:35 respectively. There is an earlier train at 18:11, but you may need to leave the game early to catch this. There are also later train options if you are planning to stay in Ipswich for a while after the game. Whatever your travel plans, it’s worth checking https://www.greateranglia.co.uk/ or your usual train operator website for updated times and any late changes. There are ticket checks on many mainline trains and ticket barriers at Ipswich.
